Funding Opportunities for Partnerships

The following are a selection of key donors which support health information projects and which might be relevant to health library partnerships. Details are included regarding the types of funding on offer, eligibility criteria and application details.

Medium Paired Institutional Partnership (PIP) Grants

The grants form part of the Health Partnership Scheme (HPS) which is a four-year programme that funds UK/Overseas health partnerships to carry out training and capacity-building projects in low-income countries.  The Scheme is funded by the UK Department for International Development.  It is managed by THET in a consortium with HLSP to deliver the programme.

The Medium Paired Institutional Partnership grants are intended to fund small-scale, clearly defined projects.

The Paired Institutional Partnerships (PIPs) funding stream will fund effective health partnership projects, encouraging reach into under-served and rural areas.   

Round One of funding is for Medium grants of up to £15,000 per year for projects of 12 to 24 months.

Multi-Country Partnership grants

The four core objectives of the Multi-Country Partnership grant scheme are to:

  • Leverage UK health worker skills to build the capacity of health workers and health systems in less developed countries
  • Contribute towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals 4, 5, 6 targets
  • Improve health outcomes for people living in poverty
  • Foster long-term partnerships between health institutions
  • Project must span three or more eligible countries (does not include UK)..

 Large Paired Institutional Partnership grants

The Large Paired Institutional Partnership grants are for established partnerships between single UK and low-income country institutions.

The Paired Institutional Partnerships (PIPs) funding stream will fund effective health partnership projects, encouraging reach into under-served and rural areas.  There will be different levels of funding: medium grants; large grants and multi-partnership grants.  There are also opportunities for partnerships to apply for bursaries for UK volunteers to spend longer periods with their overseas partner.

One round of  £30,000 per year for projects of 30 months. Opening early 2012

 Multi-paired Institutional Partnership grants

The Multi-Paired Institutional Partnership grants are for two or more Paired Institutional Partnerships working in one low-income country.

The Paired Institutional Partnerships (PIPs) funding stream will fund effective health partnership projects, encouraging reach into under-served and rural areas.  There will be different levels of funding: medium grants; large grants and multi-partnership grants.  There are also opportunities for partnerships to apply for bursaries for UK volunteers to spend longer periods with their overseas partner.

One round, projects of £60,000. Opening early 2012.

Pre-proposal workshops will be held during August and September 2011 in Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow and London. 

 Long Term volunteering 

For health system strengthening and contributing towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals 4,5, and 6 targets through Human Resources for Health capacity development. One round - now open. Grant size £200,000 to £1,500,000 for projects up to 34 months.Read more

Start-up grants - Tropical Health and Education Trust

These grants are to “facilitate the development of new and effective health partnerships between UK institutions and their counterparts overseas. They are designed to meet the cost of the activities necessary to establish and formalise a successful partnership (with an eligible country) up to the value of £5,000. The partnership must be less than two years old and show commitment to the long term. It is expected that they will fund a needs assessment and the drawing up of an MOU.

 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - Grand Challenges in Global Health

  • Grand Challenges in Global Health - There will be new opportunities in the Grand Challenges Global Health Grant programme in 2011. The purpose of the grant is to create new tools to radically improve health in the developing world. It is open to researchers in science and technology, young researchers entrepreneurs and innovators to expand ideas on fighting diseases that claim millions of lives each year. Opens in September 2011.
  • Grand Challenges Explorations - Round 6 (Use of mobile phones for health) is now closed. We welcome your application for a Grand Challenges Explorations grant. Next open in September 2011.

BMA - Information Fund
  • This helps provide health information to organisations in developing countries by donating educational materials, eg. books and DVDs. It is run in association with Teaching Aids at Low Cost.
  • The fund is open to health care institutions, health non-governmental organisations, medical school libraries and other related organisations in developing countries. It does not accept requests from individuals.
  • There is one funding round per year, with a maximum grant size of £2,000.

BMA - Humanitarian Fund
  • This aims to support NHS health professionals in undertaking humanitarian work worldwide. Grants support individual projects to cover incidental costs such as travel expenses and accommodation.
  • The fund is open to NHS health professionals.
  • Grants - up to a maximum of £3,000,
  • Currently closed - since 4th March 2011.

CILIP Health Libraries Group Bursaries
  • These can be for training courses or conferences and can be used for course/conference fees, travel costs (up to £100) and accommodation.
  • Only HLG members are eligible, though it is not necessary to be a CILIP member. Bursaries will be awarded to members who have no other funding or cannot raise the full amount, and who have not previously been awarded a place by HLG.
  • Grants are short-term - for a course or conference attendance – and are up to a maximum of £250. 
  • Applications must be in by 1st March, 1st June, 1st September or 1st December.

CILIP’s ILIG – Anthony Thompson award
  • This enables a qualified librarian from outside the UK to visit and study aspects of UK library and information work. The selection panel encouraged applications for the 2010 award from Africa and are particularly interested in library services for children. Other themes will be considered for future awards..
  • Applicants should have at least 5 years experience and not have made a previous professional visit to the UK. Preference will be given to applicants working in least developed countries, as defined by the UN at: http://www.un.org/special-rep/ohrlls/ldc/list.htm.
  • Grant sizes available are not known; the grant duration is normally a few weeks.  Funding calls are made every 2 to 3 years and the latest ended in December 2009 for 2010. See the link below for details on how to apply

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission

 

UK Scholarships
  • This offers opportunities to Commonwealth citizens to study in the UK and identifies UK citizens to study overseas, as part of the UK's contribution to the international Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan.
  • Citizens from Commonwealth countries are eligible to apply.
  • If you are a citizen of a Commonwealth country other than the UK, seeking information about UK scholarships and fellowships, the Commission currently offers the following awards: Scholarships to study for undergrad (only in four countries) or postgrad qualifications at UK Universities; Scholarships to study for UK Masters degrees by distance learning; Fellowships for mid-career academics to spend time in UK academic institutions; and Fellowships for mid-career professional staff other than academics to spend time at a Host organisation in the UK.

Professional Fellowships

Applications are invited in priority areas including public health. Professional Fellowships are not for academic study or research and full-time academics are not eligible for a Fellowship.

Applications should be made by the UK host organisation which acts as the 'nominator', and which can be from any sector. Organisations can nominate up to four candidates for a Fellowship. Applications should be made via their electronic application system.

Association of Commonwealth Universities Titular Fellowships – 2011
 
The ACU Titular Fellowships provide opportunities for staff from member universities and employees working in industry, commerce or public service in a Commonwealth country to spend periods of time in other member universities or relevant institutions outside their own country. Preference will be given to workers in the following priority subject areas: agriculture, forestry and food sciences, biotechnology, development strategies, earth and marine sciences, engineering, health and related social sciences, information technology, management for change, professional education and training, social and cultural development and university development and management.
 
Applications will be considered ONLY if the applicant is approved by the Executive Head (Vice-Chancellor, President or Rector) of a university in ACU membership. The ACU will also consider applications approved by the chief executive officer of a Commonwealth inter-university organisation..    Fellowships will be tenable for up to a maximum of six months.

Elsevier Foundation - Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries

  • This provides grants to libraries in developing countries and their supporting organisations for projects that enhance libraries’ capacity in science, technology, and medicine. These can include programmes to enhance library infrastructure, technology or information services in ways that significantly enhance their ability to make STM (scientific/social sciences, technical and medical) information available to those who need it; programmes that enhance or expand library information resources in the developing world through digitization or preservation of information that advances science, health, etc; training and education programmes for library staff, students or researchers, contributing to sustainable improvements in the library’s capacity to provide STM information in the developing world; and partnerships between libraries in developing countries and institutions in developed countries.
  • Libraries in developing countries and their supporting organisations are eligible.
  • The grant duration can be 1, 2, or 3 years. Single-year grants are US$5,000 to US$50,000.  Multi-year programmes are US$5,000 to US$50,000 per year. To apply, a cover letter and proposal must be sent online to Elsevier.

EU/ Africa - EDULINK
  • EDULINK’s objective is to foster capacity building and regional integration in higher education in ACP States and Regions, and to promote higher education as a means of reducing poverty. Its purpose is to strengthen the capacity of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) at their three constitutive levels: institutional/administrative, academic, and research and technology strengthening.
  • EDULINK funds cooperative projects between HEIs in all countries of the ACP and the 15 EU Member States that are signatories to the 9th European Development Fund.
  • Grants are generally for 1 to 3 years, and are 200,000 Euro to 500,000 Euro. Joint projects submitted by networks of ACP and European HEIs will be identified through open calls for proposals.

INASP - Small Grants Scheme
  • These are awarded for new or innovative ways to meet the increasing challenges faced in creating, sharing and improving access to information and electronic resources. Proposals should describe unusual or new projects designed to stimulate increased quality, visibility or availability of research at a national, regional or international levels. They should be locally sustainable and have the support of the local PERii country coordinator and/or local consortium support.

International Health Links Funding Scheme (IHLFS
  • Small start up grants are to support the development of new and young Links are currently still available. 
  • A wide range of not-for-profit health institutions and organisations can apply – see the website for a list of eligible countries.
  • Small grants are £3,000 for 1 year.

Wellcome Trust - International Engagement Awards
  • This supports projects to strengthen the capacity of developing countries to facilitate public engagement with health research; stimulate dialogue about health research and its impact on the public in a range of community and public contexts in developing countries; or investigate and test new methods of engagement, participation, communication or education around health research.
  • The scheme is open to a wide range of people, including media professionals, educators, science communicators, health professionals and researchers in bioscience, health, and bioethics. All projects must involve engagement with health research. The scheme is not intended to support standard delivery of health education and promotion which does not focus on health research or involve health researchers. Applicants must be based in listed developing countries or in the UK working with partners in the developing countries. Partnership projects are welcomed.
  • The maximum grant size is £30,000. 
  • Submission deadlines vary: for 2011 preliminary expressions of interest to be sent by 4th February 2011 and if selected the full proposal by 8th April 2011. Contact the International Engagement Awards office well in advance of the deadline to request an application form and to confirm the eligibility of your project.
